- Koh Phaluai is the largest island of Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park and the only one with a fishing village.
- The village of a few hundred people lies in the south of the island, while the forested north is inside the national park.
- The VIP speedboat tour (฿3890, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday) stops on Koh Phaluai for a buffet lunch.
- On the private speedboat charter you can have a seafood lunch at the fishing village, ordered in advance and paid on the spot.
- The speedboat, big boat and Red Baron tours have lunch elsewhere, so they do not include a stop on Phaluai.
The boat slows down, the engines drop to a low hum, and instead of another wall of limestone you see roofs, wooden fishing boats and a few people waving from the shore. This is koh phaluai, the largest island in Ang Thong and the only one with a real village. On the VIP and private tours it is where you stop for lunch.
Most of a day in the park is cliffs, viewpoints and quiet water. Phaluai is the one place where people actually live, and it changes the feel of the trip more than most visitors expect.
Where is Koh Phaluai and why is it different?
Koh Phaluai is the biggest island of the Mu Ko Ang Thong archipelago, and the only one with a village. Of the 42 islands in the park, people live only on Phaluai (a fishing village) and on Koh Wua Ta Lap, where the park staff are based.
The island is split in two. The village, home to a few hundred people, sits in the south and lives mostly from fishing. The northern part lies inside the national park and is still covered with forest.
That split is what makes it interesting. On one island you get the wild Ang Thong of the postcards and a working Thai fishing community, a short walk or boat ride apart. If you want the full list of islands and which ones a normal tour shows you, the guide to the Ang Thong islands puts Phaluai in context.
What is the fishing village on Koh Phaluai like?
It is small, slow and real. Expect a handful of houses near the water, fishing boats in the bay and a pace of life that has little to do with tourism.
Do not come expecting a market, souvenir shops or a beach bar strip. This is not Chaweng. The village lives from the sea, and visitors pass through for a meal, not the other way round.
What you notice first is the sound, or the lack of it. No scooters racing past, no music from beach clubs, just boats knocking against each other and the odd dog asleep in the shade. After a morning of climbing stairs with a crowd, it is a relief.
A few simple manners go a long way here:
- Cover up a little when you walk away from the beach: a T-shirt over swimwear is enough.
- Ask before you photograph people, especially children and older villagers. A smile and a raised camera usually does it.
- Stay on the paths and do not wander into yards or onto boats.
- Keep your rubbish with you until you are back on board. Small islands have a hard time dealing with waste.
None of this is a written rule from the park, it is just how you behave in someone's home village. Locals are used to visitors and friendly, but they are not part of the show.
Lunch on Koh Phaluai: which tours stop there?
Only two of the five Ang Thong tours from Koh Samui put Phaluai on the plan: the VIP speedboat and the private charter. On the VIP speedboat tour, lunch is a buffet on Koh Phaluai and it is already included in the ฿3890 price.
The other tours have lunch somewhere else. The regular speedboat eats on Tamarin Beach, while the big boat and the Red Baron serve lunch on board. That is not a bad thing, it is just a different day.
| Tour | Stop on Phaluai? | Where lunch is | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| VIP speedboat | Yes | Buffet on Koh Phaluai, included | ฿3890 per adult, park fee included |
| Private speedboat | Yes, on the usual route | Fishing village on Phaluai, paid separately | ฿39,000 per boat for up to 6 guests |
| Speedboat | No | Buffet on Tamarin Beach, included | ฿1890 per adult, park fee extra |
| Big boat | No | Buffet on board, included | From ฿1100 per adult, park fee extra |
| Red Baron | No | On board, included | ฿3700 per adult, park fee included |
On the VIP day, Phaluai comes after the morning stops: the Emerald Lake, the Wua Ta Lap viewpoint, snorkeling at Koh Wao and kayaking at Koh Sam Sao. By then you are hungry and a little sunburnt, and a long table in the shade is exactly what you want.
On the private boat, the story is slightly different. The typical route puts lunch at the fishing village at around 14:00, and it is not in the boat price. You order in advance and pay on the spot, so the guide will ask what you want to eat before you arrive.
Is the private boat the best way to see Koh Phaluai?
If Phaluai is a real reason for your trip, yes. On a private charter the route is agreed with you, so you decide how long you stay at the village and if you add a quiet beach afterwards.
The private speedboat charter runs on the Pearl, a 38 ft speedboat with two 200 hp engines. It costs ฿39,000 for up to 6 guests, plus ฿2000 for each extra guest, up to 15. Lunch, kayaking and the national park fee are not included.
Honestly, it is not the budget option and nobody books it to save money. People choose it for privacy and for the freedom to linger. If you love seafood and want an unhurried meal by the water, it is the version of Phaluai that feels most like a find.
If you only want to see the island once and tick it off, the VIP tour is the simpler choice: everything is paid, the group is small and Phaluai is part of the plan.
Mangroves, forest and the wild side of Phaluai
Away from the village, Phaluai is pure national park. Its shores are lined with some of the best mangroves in Ang Thong, and the north of the island is still forest.
Mangroves are easy to overlook from a speedboat. They look like a dark green fringe at the waterline. Up close, they are a tangle of roots standing in salt water, and they do a lot of quiet work: young fish shelter between the roots, and the trees hold the mud in place when storms push waves onto the coast.
The forest behind them belongs to the same limestone world as the rest of the park. Phaluai is also one of the islands where the Ang Thong lady's slipper grows, a rare orchid that has become the symbol of the park.
This orchid grows on the cliffs of Wua Ta Lap, Phaluai, Mae Ko and Sam Sao, and it flowers from April to August. You will not see it on every trip, and you should never pick or touch it. For langurs, hornbills and the other residents of the park, the Ang Thong wildlife guide goes into more detail.
Who will enjoy Koh Phaluai, and who will not?
Phaluai suits people who like to see how a place really works, not only how it looks in photos. If you have done the Emerald Lake and the viewpoint and want something different, the village gives the day a human side.
It is also good for anyone who struggles with heat and stairs. Lunch on Phaluai is flat ground and shade, a proper break between the climbs of the morning.
It is less of a highlight if you want maximum beach time and snorkeling. There are better swimming spots elsewhere in the park, and the village itself is small enough to walk around in a few minutes.
A quick way to decide:
- You want the classic Ang Thong day at a fair price: take the regular speedboat and skip Phaluai.
- You want a small group, more stops and Phaluai included: the VIP speedboat.
- You want Phaluai on your own terms, with a long lunch: the private charter.
- You get seasick easily or are on a tight budget: the big boat, without Phaluai.
The VIP tour suits couples and small groups who want everything paid in advance, while the private charter suits families or friends who want the boat and the schedule to themselves.
Practical tips before you go to Koh Phaluai
Phaluai is inside the national park, so the usual park rules and fees apply. The park is usually closed every year from 1 November to 15 December, and no tours run during that time.
The park fee is ฿300 per adult and ฿150 per child aged 3-12 and under 130 cm. It is already included in the VIP price. On the private charter it is paid separately, in cash.
The VIP tour runs on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday only, so if Phaluai matters to you, plan your week around those days. The private boat can go any day while the park is open.
January to September usually brings the calmest sea. In October and the second half of December the water can be rough, and the captain may change the order of stops or skip one. If weather moves the plan, it is the captain's call, and it is always made for safety.
A few things worth packing for the village stop:
- A light shirt or sarong to cover up when you walk off the beach.
- Some small cash, in case you want a cold drink or, on the private tour, to pay for lunch.
- Sandals you can slip on and off, since you may step onto wet sand or a jetty.
- A photo of your passport: the number is needed for the insurance at check-in.
